Study of Water & Energy Use in Bristol Bay Sockeye Fishery

An international team of researchers recently completed an analysis of energy and water used in the Bristol Bay salmon fishery. The results have been published in Journal of Cleaner Production.

In general, the study found that energy and freshwater consumed in the harvesting, processing, and management of Bristol Bay salmon is relatively low compared to other wild-capture fisheries and animal-sourced proteins. When comparing the amount of freshwater consumed by the fishery the difference with terrestrial proteins was particularly large. Harvesting and processing Bristol Bay sockeye uses less than 1/100th of the freshwater consumed per kilogram of animal-sourced foods such as beef, pork, and chicken.
