AMSEA Seeking Focus Group Participants & Partners

The Alaska Marine Safety and Education Association (AMSEA) is working on a project to improve commercial fishing safety. The focus of this particular project is on salmon set gillnetters. AMSEA is looking for any marine safety partners interested in being part of a research study. This will involve a two-hour long focus group. The goal is to improve marine safety training and outreach in Bristol Bay.

Set netters are experiencing high fatality rates. We conducted a pilot study last year in Unalakleet with the help of local fishermen. We would like to conduct a more in depth community study including Bristol Bay with:

·       Fishermen.

·       Tribes/villages/cities.

·       CDQ groups.

·       VPSOs.

·       Fishing groups.

·       And anyone in the community with an interest in marine safety.

The focus is on commercial set gillnetters. We hope to recruit at least 3 Alaska Native participants and at least 3 commercial setnetters. But anyone who spends time out on the water will be invited! Community members are invited to attend discussions. They are also invited to take marine safety training that will come out of this.
